Demolition Contractors' Perceptions of Impediments to Salvage and Reuse of Wood Structural Components

Abstract: The study was conducted to ascertain demolition contractors' perceptions of the primary impediments to the widespread salvage of wood structural components for reuse or recycling. Assessment of the attitudes of demolition contractors was chosen since their participation in the salvage and reuse of materials is a key component necessary for any program to reduce the waste disposal rate of demolition debris. The insights obtained from the study can be used to facilitate future planning and design of programs and… Show more

“…Unlike new building components that can be sourced from the market with proper quality certificates, salvaged building components are usually not available off the shelf and cannot be trusted. However, according to a few articles, informality and good relationships among the stakeholders are reported to help overcome this challenge and promote reuse ( Chileshe et al, 2016b ; da Rocha and Sattler, 2009 ; Shaurette, 2006 ).…”

“…• Fluorescent Light Bulbs -Mercury Although the quantity of debris resulting from demolition activity that is diverted from landfills through recycling has been increasing, a recent survey of demolition contractors (Figure 6) shows that a large percentage of wood debris continues to be disposed of in a manner that has the potential to contaminate groundwater surrounding C&D landfills (Shaurette, 2006). Although raw wood products do not contain hazardous material, contaminated wood (exposed to industrial contaminants or oils) and treated wood need greater scrutiny before disposal in a C&D landfill.…”
