Demonstration of free space coherent optical communication using integrated silicon photonic orbital angular momentum devices

Abstract: We propose and demonstrate silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs) for free-space spatial-division-multiplexing (SDM) optical transmission with multiplexed orbital angular momentum (OAM) states over a topological charge range of -2 to +2. The silicon PIC fabricated using a CMOS-compatible process exploits tunable-phase arrayed waveguides with vertical grating couplers to achieve space division multiplexing and demultiplexing. The experimental results utilizing two silicon PICs achieve SDM mux/demux bit-err… Show more

“…for muxing and demuxing, which are inherently lossy. Recent demonstrations of theoretically lossless OAM muxing devices, based on waveguides [55] or freespace optics [18], indicate that the required component technology is concurrently developing to enable realistic deployments of scalable networks based on OAM-MDM. specially designed, and ultimately, it offered only an alternative to commercially available free-space components.…”

“…Hence, by adopting OFDM in FSO, long haul transmissions with higher data rate may be achieved [24][25][26][27][28]. Mode division multiplexing is a more recent development in FSO systems [29][30][31][32]. In an experiment, transmission of 4 × 42.8 Gbps is reported by employing MDM scheme over FSO [33].…”

“…Direct generation of OAM-beams has been demonstrated using a single-mode 860 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) with the dielectric SPP deposited on its top mirror [27]. A CMOS-compatible photonic integrated circuit (PIC) OAM-(de)multiplexer have been proposed in [28], and in [29] data transmission using the proposed PIC was experimentally demonstrated for two multiplexed OAM states.…”
