Demonstration of giant MCA aneurysm by transcranial duplex sonography and color Doppler imaging

Abstract: Transcranial color Doppler sonography is a new diagnostic technique which allows real-time, color-coded imaging of basal cerebral arteries, with simultaneous demonstration of parenchymal structures in the B-mode scan. With this technique we were able noninvasively to show a giant fusiform aneurysm of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) in an 11-year-old boy. Transcranial color Doppler sonography through the intact temporal bone demonstrated the size and location of the aneurysm and provided real-time imaging of t… Show more

“…due to pathologic conbtions. Arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms, stenoses or occlusions of basal cerebral arteries can be detected non-invasively with this method (3, 14,15,23). In combination with the measurement of flow volumes in the brain-feehg cervical arteries and of total cerebral blood flow (26,27,30), TCCD is a powerful diagnostic tool in primary and follow-up examinations of patients with cerebmvascular hsorders and in the investigation of the physiology and pathophysiology of the cerebral circulation.…”

“…10 The capability of visualizing the full 3D flow structure seems to be another advantage, because 2D flow analysis may not be helpful for visualizing complex intraaneurysmal flow structure. 22,26,29 Conventional catheter an-giography and intravascular ultrasonography likely provide overall intraaneurysmal flow structure. An intrinsic limitation of those technologies, however, is that the flow conditions in the parent artery may be significantly altered by the rate of contrast injection or by the intravascular placement of a catheter or probe.…”
