Demonstration of multi-wavelength tunable fiber lasers based on a digital micromirror device processor

Abstract: Based on a digital micromirror device (DMD) processor as the multi-wavelength narrow-band tunable filter, we demonstrate a multi-port tunable fiber laser through experiments. The key property of this laser is that any lasing wavelength channel from any arbitrary output port can be switched independently over the whole C-band, which is only driven by single DMD chip flexibly. All outputs display an excellent tuning capacity and high consistency in the whole C-band with a 0.02 nm linewidth, 0.055 nm wavelength t… Show more

“…The maximum wavelength drift is less than 0.013 nm and the maximum peak power fluctuation is 0.07 dB at room temperature. The linewidth is better than that reported in [5] (0.05 nm) and [8] (0.02 nm), and the maximum peak power fluctuation is better than that in [8] (0.25 dB). Compared with other tunable lasers with the same tuning mechanism, the laser output stability has been further improved.…”

“…In 2009, W. Shin used the DMD-based tunable laser system as light sources for the optical time domain reflectometry, with a tuning range of 1525–1562 nm, and an improved laser tuning accuracy of 0.1 nm [7]. Our research group also reported a multi-wavelength tunable fiber laser based on a DMD chip with a step of 0.055 nm [8].…”

“…An AJD-4500 from Ajile was used to control the DMD chip. The ECLD is shown on the left side of Figure 1, where the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) output from the LD is wavelength resolved by a grating and is focused onto the DMD by a lens [14][15][16][17][18][19]. At this time, by placing the grating and DMD at both focal points of the lens, each wavelength is focused onto the DMD surface in a spatially separated state.…”

“…The propagation and amplification of the OAM beams in fibre digital lasers are more stable, and the mode coupling efficiency is higher. Moreover, the fibre digital lasers are robust and reproducible [95,96].…”
