Dendropanax morbifera Léveille extract ameliorates cadmium-induced impairment in memory and hippocampal neurogenesis in rats

Abstract: BackgroundCadmium leads to learning and memory impairment. Dendropanax morbifera Léveille stem extract (DMS) reduces cadmium-induced oxidative stress in the hippocampus. We investigated the effects of DMS on cadmium-induced impairments in memory in rats.MethodsCadmium (2 mg/kg), with or without DMS (100 mg/kg), was orally administered to 7-week-old Sprague-Dawley rats for 28 days. Galantamine (5 mg/kg), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, was intraperitoneally administered as a positive control. A novel-object … Show more

“…Dendropanax morbifera (D. morbifera) Léveille (Araliaceae) is an evergreen broad-leaved tree that is found in southwest Korea, e.g., Jeollanamdo or Jeju Island [10,11]. The tree has been used as a non-official alternative medicine for the treatment of headaches, infections and skin problems [12]. The methanol extracts of leaves and debarked stems from D. morbifera have effective antioxidant and anticancer properties [13].…”

“…Considerable compounds isolated from D. morbifera have been shown to possess physiological activities ( Chung et al, 2009 ; Kim R.W. et al, 2016 ; Kim W. et al, 2016 ); however, this study is the first to demonstrate that HOD from D. morbifera can contribute to anti-obese efficacy through inhibition of the TG biosynthesis pathway. To tracking the active ingredient, the DM divided by Sepbox into eleven fractions (fr.1–fr.11), and among them Fr.5 is superior to others in that the inhibitory efficacy of de novo TG biosynthesis in HepG2 cells ( Figure 1 ).…”

“…This result is consistent with results from a previous study showing that long-term treatment with D -galactose induces learning and memory deficits in both water maze and step-down latency [ 18 ]. In addition, D. morbifera stem extracts significantly improved novel object recognition memory in cadmium-exposed rats [ 19 ]. In addition, ethyl acetate fraction of D. morbifera ameliorated high fat diet-induced memory impairment measured in Y-maze, passive avoidance, and Morris water maze tests [ 20 ].…”
