Dengue in the United States of America: A Worsening Scenario?

Abstract: Dengue is a febrile illness caused by any of the four dengue virus types (DENV-1 to -4, genus Flavivirus, family Flaviviridae) mainly transmitted by the mosquito Aedes aegypti. DENV can be transmitted by blood transfusion. “…1 In the continental United States, autochthonous transmission of dengue has been observed in Florida since 2009. 2 No licensed vaccines or therapeutic drugs are available for preventing or treating either disease. “…Flooding, contaminated water or sediment, and damp environments increase risk of exposure to mosquitoes, heavy metals, pesticides, other chemicals, and harmful bacteria (Ivers and Ryan 2006; Mudarri and Fisk 2007). Diseases transmitted by mosquitoes such as Dengue and Chikungunya are increasingly of concern in Puerto Rico (Añez and Rios 2013; Weintraub 2014). School attendance is important for academic success, and frequent absences during a child's early years in school may have substantial impacts on educational success (Chang et al 2008).…”
