Dengue Virus Surveillance and Blood Safety: A One Health Perspective

Abstract: The provision of blood products to save a life is a noble undertaking for any organization tasked with the duty. In addition to saving millions of lives, blood products pose health risks associated with adverse events. Much has been done to mitigate these challenges, but emerging new infectious diseases pose a public health challenge to both the safety of blood and its availability. The dengue virus an arbovirus is one such virus that is endemic in tropical and subtropical countries. The data emerging from the… Show more

“…The lack of monitoring and surveillance systems for detecting resistance patterns and mosquito population trends hinders timely intervention and adaptation of control strategies [51,52]. Constraints on human, financial, and manpower resources limit the scope of routine surveillance [53,54]. Additionally, mosquito populations exhibit natural genetic variability that can lead to mutations that predispose certain individuals to insecticide exposure.…”

“…This approach seeks to recognize the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, including studying the dynamics of infectious diseases and designing effective control and eradication efforts. 4,5 In the context of dengue fever in Bali, the One Health approach can help identify factors contributing to dengue disease transmission and design comprehensive and integrated interventions to address the various dimensions hindering dengue eradication in Bali.…”

“…This mini-review was part of a large study that sought to understand the seroprevalence of the DENV among blood donors and its implications for blood safety. 11 To understand the magnitude and broader picture of the DENV and blood safety, we conducted a mini-review of existing literature from the Scopus database. The database was chosen purposefully because it contains STM journal articles and the references found in them are accessible enabling both forward-and backward-looking searches.…”
