Trends and Research Hotspots of Knockdown Resistance in the Aedes Genus in Indonesia: A Bibliometric Surveillance from the Scopus Database

Introduction: Knockdown resistance in the Aedes genus in Indonesia is increasing; however, a comprehensive analysis of trends and research hotspots has not been reported.Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the trends and research hotspots of knockdown resistance in the Aedes genus in Indonesia using bibliometric surveillance, focusing on information from the Scopus database. Methods:Various keywords and databases were used to screen the articles, and all the articles obtained were analyzed using network, overlay, and density visualization using VOSviewer software version 1.6.20. Results:The findings showed that 14 articles were identified, resulting in 86 terms corresponding to the topic of this study, forming six main clusters of 1,496 links with 7,188 links. Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti have been reported to be resistant to the Aedes genus. The types of insecticides reported and suspected to cause kdr are pirimiphos methyl, cyfluthrin, piperonyl butoxide, cyhalothrin, cypermermethrin, transflutrin, temephos, malathion, organophosphates and fenitrothion. For the intended kdr target, alleles affected by these conditions occurred in f1534c, l982w, s989p, v1023g, s996p, and others. The region with the highest reported kdr in the genus Aedes was Yogyakarta (central Java), followed by Bali (Denpasar) and Jakarta. The identification of kdr in the Aedes genus in Indonesia has focused on 'voltage-gated sodium channel' OR 'vgsc,' 'larvae,' and 'temephos,' which are research hotspots that have a high linkage of terms with other terms, while the phrases 'voltage sensitive sodium channel' OR 'vssc,' 'primary vector' and 'genotyping' are research coldspots characterized by links dominated by recent research.Conclusions: There has been a significant increase in the incidence of kdr in the genus Aedes in Indonesia. This highlights the importance of focusing on understanding resistance mechanisms, exploring new control strategies, addressing geographic variation, and encouraging collaborative efforts to underscore the importance of a comprehensive approach to combating mosquito-borne diseases. This surveillance provides valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and public health practitioners for formulating targeted interventions to mitigate the future impact of Aedes mosquito-borne diseases in Indonesia.

Dengue virus infection (IVD) has resulted in significant mortality and morbidity in the past decade in Bali, Indonesia. IVD case reports in 57 subdistricts in the period January–December 2022 reached 7,582 cases (distribution of cases between subdistricts in Figure 1), an incidence rate (IR) of 162/100,000 population (Figure 1), and mortality of 15 people (case fatality rate [CFR] of 0.2%). Cases were declared to have tripled from the previous year, and IR did not meet the national target (> 49/100,000 population). The urgency of dengue eradication in Bali aims to reduce morbidity and mortality due to DHF. We highlight the challenges and obstacles that make IVD cases in Bali increasingly concerning. Based on our review, climate variability is essential in increasing vector populations in the environment. However, a comprehensive study that studies the interrelationships of all climate elements, including temperature, air humidity, wind speed, air pressure, precipitation, rainy days, rain properties, the standardized precipitation index (SPI), and the length of solar irradiation in increasing abundance, population, and vector activity with increasing cases of IVD, has not been studied comprehensively.

The growing demand for donated whole blood and blood products to save lives has both health benefits and health risks for blood recipients at the same time. Dengue virus, a re-emerging viral disease poses a threat to blood safety, and it has spread to over 128 countries in the world. Several studies have documented transfusion-transmitted (TT) dengue, with the first cases being reported in China in 2002 and Singapore in 2008. To understand the magnitude and broader picture of the dengue virus and blood safety, we conducted a mini-review of published literature from the Scopus database. The review focused on the number of publications related to the dengue virus among blood donors. Using keywords ‘Dengue virus’ AND ‘Blood safety’, ‘ Dengue virus’ AND ‘Blood donors’ and ‘Emerging infectious diseases’ AND “Blood safety” were used to extract data from the Scopus database which was downloaded as a CSV Excel file covering a period 2004 to 2021. This was followed by a data-cleaning exercise and a descriptive analysis to generate the frequency of the number of publications. Most studies, as can be seen in the review, were concentrated in tropical regions of the world. Globally, South America and the Asian regions had the largest number of publications; while at the country level, Brazil and India had the highest number. More research output was witnessed during the years 2014 and 2018. The regions that experienced more frequent outbreaks of the disease, with the exception Africa, published most of the research work. Therefore, much more research work is needed to protect the safety of blood donors in Africa.
