Motivated cognition is an approach emphasizing that individuals' motivation directs cognitive processes. Since the 1970s, it has been one of the most influential views of information processing, engendering many interesting theories. This entry aims to introduce some of the most influential classic studies that contributed to the development of the motivated cognition approach and provide an overview of diverse theories based on the motivated cognition approach, such as self‐evaluation maintenance theory, self‐affirmation theory, and cognitive adaptation theory. Further, it discusses how motivated cognition has been applied in communication and media research.
