Densities and Viscosities of (Choline Chloride + Urea) Deep Eutectic Solvent and Its Aqueous Mixtures in the Temperature Range 293.15 K to 363.15 K

Abstract: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been regarded as one of the most promising environmentally benign and cost-effective alternatives to conventional ionic liquids and volatile organic solvents. Aqueous mixtures of DESs have the potential to afford modified properties for specific applications. Densities and dynamic viscosities of a common and popular DES composed of choline chloride and urea in 1:2 molar ratio, named reline, and its aqueous mixtures in the temperature range 293.15 K to 363.15 K are reported. A… Show more

“…The addition of NiCl 2 ⋅6 H 2 O to a ChCl–urea mixture considerably reduces the viscosity of the resulting DES, and it appears that the water of hydration plays an important role in this case. However, by increasing the mole fraction of NiCl 2 ⋅6 H 2 O, the number of hydrogen bonds between ChCl and NiCl 2 increased and resulted in an increase in viscosity …”

“…For example, the viscosity of a water‐saturated ChCl–oxalic acid system at 293.15 K was 200 times lower than in the case of the dried sample. By increasing the amount of water, the viscosity of DESs decreased …”

“…[30] This could be a problem at industrial scale or in continuous flow reactions (Table 1). However, the addition of a new different component, such water, carboxylic acid, inorganic/organic halide, which forms ternary mixtures, has frequently an important and positive impact on the viscosity and density.…”

“…The most encountered NADESs are based on choline as an essential nutrient in animals, having important metabolic roles . Another component of the studied NADES, urea, also plays key roles in the metabolism of nitrogen‐containing compounds . When choline chloride (as an ionic species) is mixed with urea (as a hydrogen bond donor) at a proper molar ratio, a eutectic mixture occurs, consisting of cations and anions, as well as neutral components .…”
