In the last few years, ionic liquids (ILs) have been the focus of extensive studies concerning the relationship between structure and properties and how this impacts their application. Despite a large number of studies, several topics remain controversial or not fully answered, such as: the existence of ion pairs, the concept of free volume and the effect of water and its implications in the modulation of ILs physicochemical properties. In this paper, we present a critical review of state-of-the-art literature regarding structure–property relationship of ILs, we re-examine analytical theories on the structure–property correlations and present new perspectives based on the existing data. The interrelation between transport properties (viscosity, diffusion, conductivity) of IL structure and free volume are analysed and discussed at a molecular level. In addition, we demonstrate how the analysis of microscopic features (particularly using NMR-derived data) can be used to explain and predict macroscopic properties, reaching new perspectives on the properties and application of ILs.

The changes in viscosity exhibited upon mixing remain one of the major challenges for substance property prediction. Viscosity often drastically changes after even small changes in concentration of one of the compounds in the mixture. The viscosity behavior of mixtures of ionic liquids with water has been studied. First, a generalized evaluation of the shape of the viscosity‐concentration curves has been done. About one‐tenth of the investigated systems exhibited maxima or inflection points of the curve. The simple logarithmic mixing rule turns out to be applicable as a first approximation for many systems. However, it tends to underestimate mixture viscosity. Following these results, parameters for a group contribution method were fitted and evaluated. This method is based on the Grunberg and Nissan extension of the logarithmic mixing rule.

Ionic-liquid-based aqueous biphasic systems (IL-based ABS) have been largely investigated as promising extraction and purification routes. In this context, the determination of their phase diagrams and the physical properties of the coexisting phases are of high relevance when envisaging their large-scale applications. Low viscosities improve the mass transfer and reduce energy consumptions, while the knowledge on their densities is important for the equipment design. In this work, novel phase diagrams for aqueous solutions of imidazolium-based ILs combined with acetate-based salts, namely KCH 3 CO 2 or NaCH 3 CO 2 , are reported and discussed. The ability of the acetate-based salts to induce the phase separation not only depends on the ions hydration energy, but also on the concentration of "free" ions in solution. The tie-lines, tie-line lengths and critical points are also addressed. Experimental measurements of density and viscosity of the coexisting phases, for the different systems and at several compositions and temperatures, are additionally presented. The Othmer-Tobias and Bancroft equations are also applied to ascertain on the tie-lines coherence. It is here shown that low-viscous IL-based ABS, with a high difference in the densities of the coexisting phases, can be formed with organic and biodegradable salts thus offering enhanced features over conventional polymer-based systems.
