Density Gradients, Cellular Structure and Thermal Conductivity of High-Density Polyethylene Foams by Different Amounts of Chemical Blowing Agent

Abstract: LDPE (low-density polyethylene) foams were prepared using the improved compression moulding technique (ICM) with relative densities ranging from 0.3 to 0.7 and with different levels of chemical blowing agents (from 1% to 20%). The density gradients, cellular structure and thermal conductivity of the foams were characterized. The density and amount of CBA used were found to have a significant effect on the cellular structure both at the mesoscale (density gradients) and at the microscale (different cell sizes a… Show more

“…Hence, the choice of blowing agent is particularly important [ 17 ]. Compared with physical blowing agents, chemical blowing agents have obvious advantages in compressive strength [ 18 ], environmental performance [ 17 ], thermal insulation effect [ 19 ], bonding performance [ 20 ], and bubble structure [ 21 ]. Mohamad Saed Hussein et al [ 22 ] discussed the effect of sodium bicarbonate as a blowing agent in epoxy resin.…”

“…Among various molecular architectures, low-density PE is recognized for its broader foaming window compared to linear low-density PE and high-density PE. 28 Our study delved into foam extrusion using a blend of commercially accessible PEs (low-density PE and linear low-density PE) to achieve foamed beads amenable to molding at low steam pressure. This was executed using a commercially available extrusion setup.…”

“…Chemical foaming agents are generally solids (powders) generating gases once they reach their thermal decomposition temperature [ 23 ]. Azodicarbonamide (ADC), with a decomposition temperature of around 210 °C (pure ADC), is one of the most famous and versatile chemical foaming agents [ 24 ]. The main reason is due to the possibility of controlling its decomposition temperature using activators (zinc oxide (ZnO) and zinc stearate (ZnSt)) combined with high gas yield efficiency (231 cm 3 of gas per gram) [ 25 , 26 ].…”
