Dental implants in individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta: a 6‐year follow‐up study

Abstract: Aim The aim of the present study was to follow‐up our previous prospective study that reported high implant survival in a group of Norwegian individuals with osteogenesis imperfecta. Our hypothesis was that implant treatment in these persons has approximately the same long‐term survival rate as in healthy individuals. Study group The previous study included seven participants (20 implants), four of them (11 implants) took part in the present study and the other three had died. The participants were followed up… Show more

“…Besides the skeletal phenotype, other extra‐skeletal manifestations are vascular fragility, blue sclerae, dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) and hearing loss. Effective implant therapy has previously been described in some case reports for OI cases 178,389–399 . Effective implant therapy for OI patients was reported in a retrospective analysis, with a survival rate ranging from 93% to 100% 395 .…”

“…Still, limited scientific evidence is available, and the risks associated with IV bisphosphonate therapy should be considered, and the patients should be informed that it is an individual case 178 . Myint et al 392 . cited a 91% implant survival rate (100% if the implant neck fracture is excluded) and positive patient satisfaction with implant therapy in a prospective study.…”

“…In addition, interdisciplinary dental treatment may be required to correct jaw and dental abnormalities [7,8]. Orofacial manifestations associated with OI include dentinogenesis imperfecta, dental and skeletal malocclusion, and tooth anomalies [7][8][9][10].…”

“…Case reports in the literature suggest that dental implant therapy may be a reliable option for patients with OI [7][8][9][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24]. Oral rehabilitation treatments, ranging from single crowns to implant-supported prostheses, showed an acceptable outcome at short-term follow-up.…”
