Dental pain prevalence associated with caries experience in pediatric patients in a clinical sample in Mexico

Abstract: The aim of this study was to identify if the prevalence of dental pain (past and / or present) is associated with caries experience in Mexican children, as well as to characterize factors associated with dental pain. A cross-sectional study was conducted in a consecutive sample of 309 children 2 to 12 years old who were patients at a dental school clinic in Toluca, Mexico. Data were collected from clinical records. The dependent variable had three categories: 0 = have never had dental pain, 1 = had dental pain… Show more

“…This suggests that both dental pain and caries may constitute common problems among Mexican schoolchildren, as untreated caries are associated with dental pain [2,20,35,38]. The present study found a correlation of dental pain with dental caries, a finding similar to the results described in the literature [37][38][39]. The presence of severe caries is often associated with dentin exposure and, in the most severe cases, with pulpal inflammation.…”

“…The prevalence of caries in Mexico has decreased in recent decades, but a substantial proportion of the population still needs treatment in both primary and permanent dentition, with this figure reaching almost 100% in some regions [2]. This suggests that both dental pain and caries may constitute common problems among Mexican schoolchildren, as untreated caries are associated with dental pain [2,20,35,38]. The present study found a correlation of dental pain with dental caries, a finding similar to the results described in the literature [37][38][39].…”

“…Although some studies report high prevalences of restorative experience for dental caries [ 30 ], most reports relevant to Latin America [ 9 ] and other middle-income countries [ 15 , 26 ] showed a higher proportion of the "decayed" component in both primary and permanent teeth. Finding children suffering from untreated caries-induced pain is a common occurrence in these countries, such as Mexico [ 31 ]. This has an impact on the quality of life of children, affecting those with lower socioeconomic status more: large numbers of children would benefit from better access to dental prevention and care.…”

“…It can manifest in the form of early childhood caries in children. [ 1 ] This is a particularly dangerous type of dental caries. It can start at a young age and progress quickly.…”
