Dental scanning in CAD/CAM technologies: laser beams

Abstract: Scanning, also called digitizing, is the process of gathering the requisite data from an object. Many different technologies are used to collect three dimensional data. They range from mechanical and very slow, to radiation-based and highly-automated. Each technology has its advantages and disadvantages, and their applications and specifications overlap. The aims of this study are represented by establishing a viable method of digitally representing artifacts of dental casts, proposing a suitable scanner and p… Show more

“…The non-contact scanning procedure involves laser scanning (laser triangulation technology) and photogrammetry. Different types of dental structures need different types of scanning procedures in order to obtain a competitive complex 3D virtual model that can be used in CAD/CAM technologies [ 14 ].…”

“…Their demerits are the time-consuming and impractical procedures needed for artifact digitization. 11 Non-contact scanning includes laser scanning and photogrammetry. The basis of this technology is laser triangulation.…”

“…The purpose of the 3D scanner is to measure and record the relative distance between the surface of the object and a known point in space. This geometric data is expressed in the form of point cloud data ( Sinescu et al, 2008 ). In order to generate accurate 3D models for inspection, 3D reconstruction of metal crowns is required.…”

“…Therefore, it is of great significance to obtain 3D reconstruction of dental models. However, the related research mainly focused on reconstruction and measurement of plaster dental models or casting dental models, while there are few studies on dental metal models manufactured by SLM ( Sinescu et al, 2008 ; Zhou and Fan, 2017 ; Song et al, 2018 ; Yang et al, 2018 ). We already have a case of E-quality control of automotive parts, but we still face some challenges for the E-quality control of metal crowns manufactured by SLM.…”
