Dental service utilization by Europeans aged 50 plus

Abstract: In comparison with other European regions, there is a tendency toward more frequent and preventive dental treatment of the elderly populations residing in Scandinavia and Western Europe. Such utilization patterns appear only partially attributable to differences in need for and accessibility of dental care.

“…The Lika-Senj County with a small number of health care users had the lowest number of visits (19 %), which could be justified by less available dental care facilities and a population structure. A study carried out among Europeans of the age of 50 years and over showed a tendency of increase in the number of preventive examinations and procedures, especially in Scandinavia and Western Europe, which was explained by different needs in the use and availability of dental health care (12). The lack of time and superficiality in their daily work should not be the reasons affecting examination procedures especially in counties with a large number of health care users and numerous contractual teams, as in the City of Zagreb.…”

“…In a recent meta-analysis, Simning and Wijngaarden reported an estimated relative risk of 2.4 (95%CI 1.6, 3.7) for melanoma in male dentists, and to a lesser magnitude for female dentists (relative risk=2.0, 95% CI 1.1, 3.9) 14) . Although some of the previous reports argued that the elevated risks experienced by dentists may be related to social status level 2,36,37) or lifestyle (e.g., behavior related to sunlight exposure) 22) , the review by…”
