Dentistry for those Requiring Special Care

Abstract: Individuals with special needs, namely those whose dental care is complicated by a physical, mental or social disability, often have a higher level of unmet dental need and poorer oral hygiene than the general population, and offer unique challenges to the dental practitioner. This paper outlines the dental management of the three most common groups of individuals with special needs.

“…Figueiredo (2002) (13) states that dental education institutions must be aware of their social nature vis-à-vis PSN. The experience of working and coming into contact with these patients is essential in the training of future dentists and contributes with excellence to the inner growth and experience of life as human beings (14) . Care for PSN, at undergraduate level, provides more than just techniques for preventive and healing treatments; it also provides experiences with other sciences and with interpersonal relationships, which will help train students as individuals (15) .…”

“…Some papers report fewer dental caries in children with haemophilia than healthy controls (Boyd & Kinirons, ; Sonbol et al , ). Although the type of dental procedure is usually different in children, general principles and management strategies regarding both replacement and local haemostatic measures applicable for all age groups are described by the WFH (http://www.wfh.org/2/docs/Publications/Dental_Care/TOH-40_Dental_treatment.pdf) and in numerous publications (Scully & Kumar, ; Brewer & Correa, ; Israels et al , ; Gupta et al , ; Jover‐Cervero et al , ; Kumar et al , ). For dental extraction of permanent teeth, most studies suggest that the factor level should be raised to 50–70% before the extraction and kept at 50% for 5–7 d (Mulkey, ; Ublansky, ), although some authors suggest that 30% may be enough (Zanon et al , ).…”
