Dentoalveolar Growth of Patients with Complete Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate by Early Two-Stage Furlow and Push-Back Method: Preliminary Results

“…69 Although there is a reduced incidence of fistula formation, which may be related to decreased tension at the repair site, the larger denuded area of palate has been shown to lead to poorer outcomes in terms of maxillary growth and scarring. 70,71 We must acknowledge that the crude classification of techniques into unipedicled or bipedicled techniques does not take into account subtle variations within each method, such as the use of vomerine flaps, 72 or the extent of relaxing incisions.…”

“…There are recent approaches to surgical scheduling that suggest abandoning several years' postponement of hard palate closure by shortening the delay period as much as possible for speech reasons (Kitagawa et al, 2004). The authors emphasize the possibility of closing the remaining cleft with minimum invasion by maintaining the two-stage palate closure, because the cleft width diminishes after closure of the soft palate.…”

“…Vivid 910 is a non-contact 3D digitizer that employs a triangulation method. The Vivid scanner has been used for several years by clinical and forensic applications, such as examining changes in patients with cleft palates (Kitagawa et al 2004), investigating facial changes (Kau and Richmond 2008), and analyzing bite-mark evidence (Flora et al 2009;Evans et al 2013).…”
