The properties of the Barkhausen noise in a series of permalloy squares have been measured with a magneto-optical hysteresigraph. The magnetic structures have been litographically defined in a permalloy film ͑thickness 160 nm͒ as squares having a size from 20 to 320 m. The statistical distributions of the most significant parameters of the Barkhausen jumps have been extracted from the original data. At variance with respect to bulk and thin films, the jump amplitude distribution does not follow a well-defined power-law behavior. This observation is explained in terms of a transition between a discrete magnetization regime typical of small magnetic structures and the more usual regime observed in extended samples.

We recently designed and implemented a new method for detecting and quantifying Barkhausen noise in magnetoresistive (MR) read heads. The new method employs a time-domain digital filter that detects discontinuities in the signal output, measures the magnitude of the associated jump, and determines the parts of the read output cycle where the Barkhausen jumps occur. The filter and an efficient algorithm suitable for real-time processing on a laboratory PC are described. Its transfer characteristics are also presented. Finally, we demonstrate the action of the filter on MR elements.

Characteristics of base-line-popping (BLP) noise in MR heads a r e described. A simple mathematical model describing BLP noise spectrum is presented. In this model, random-telegraph-like noise is used t o a p proximate BLP noise. T h e correlation function and noise spectrum density are derived analytically for a special case.T h e calculated noise spectrum is in good agreement with experimental data. "Excessive noise" in t h e low frequencies a r e found to be t h e general signature of BLP noise for shielded MR heads.
