Deposition of Multicomponent AlTiCrMoN Protective Coatings for Metal Cutting Applications

Abstract: The high potential of the protective coatings for metal machining applications using the physical vapor deposition (PVD) processes is one to be valued, and will accelerate development of the multicomponent coating design and increase the cutting efficiency. In this study, nanostructured AlTiCrMoN coatings in a multilayered structure were fabricated using cathodic-arc deposition (CAD). Controlling the cathode current of both CrMo and AlTi alloy targets in a nitrogen environment, multilayered AlTiN/CrMoN… Show more

“…We purposefully selected iron-containing steel as the material to be processed to study the functioning of the adhesive sublayer and the outer DLC layer under the loads typical for milling this material. We should add that the authors have research experience in using DLCs for turning hardened bearing steels, and in their previous works, a specific effect was observed from the use of coatings for ceramic tools [21,[47][48][49]. This makes it possible to use a carbide tool as an object of research in this work.…”

“…Poisson's ratio of ν = 0.25 was assumed for the deposited coatings. The Rockwell-C indentation test was performed using a Rockwell-C hardness tester (HR-200, Mitutoyo Taiwan Co.,Taichung, Taiwan) with an applied load of 150 kg to evaluate the adhesion strength following the ISO 26443 standard [27,28]. Similar to Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) 3198 indentation test evaluation, ISO 26443 specifies a method for the qualitative evaluation of the adhesion of ceramic coatings by indentation with a Rockwell diamond indenter.…”

“…In addition, the presence of a nitride sublayer under the DLC layer based on the Cr-Al-Si system increases the strength of the external DLC layer's adhesive bond with the tool base [83][84][85] and contributes to the formation of secondary wear-resistant phases during high-temperature heating [86][87][88][89][90]. When heated in oxygen, the coating components can form nonstoichiometric oxide phases, contributing to the change in the contact interaction between the ceramic article and the counter body nature [91][92][93].…”
