The effects of radio frequency (RF) atmospheric pressure (AP) He/H2 plasma and thermal treatment on the hydrogenation of TiO2 thin films were investigated and compared in this work. The color of the original TiO2 film changes from white to black after being hydrogenated in He/H2 plasma at 160 W (gas temperature ~ 381 °C) within 5 min. While the color of the thermal treated TiO2 film did not change obviously even in pure H2 or He/H2 atmosphere with higher temperature (470 °C) and longer time (30 min). This indicated that a more effective hydrogenation reaction happened through RF AP He/H2 plasma than through pure H2 or He/H2 thermal treatment. The color change of TiO2 film was measured based on CIE L*a*b* color space system. Hydrogenated TiO2 film displayed improved visible light absorbance with plasma power. The morphology of the cauliflower-like nanoparticles of the TiO2 film surface remained unchanged after plasma process. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results showed that the content of Ti3+ species and Ti-OH bonds in the plasma hydrogenated black TiO2 increased comparing with the thermal treated TiO2. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns and Raman spectra indicated that plasma would destroy crystal structure of TiO2 surface layer, while thermal annealing would increase the overall crystallinity. The different trends of XRD and Raman results suggested that plasma modification on TiO2 surface layer is more drastic than on its inner layer, which was also consistent with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. Optical emission spectra (OES) results suggest that numerous active species were generated in RF He/H2 plasma, while there were not any peaks detected in thermal processing. A possible mechanism about TiO2 hydrogenation process by plasma has been proposed. Numerous active species were generated in the bulk plasma region, accelerated in the sheath region, and bumped toward TiO2 film, which will react with TiO2 surface to form oxygen vacancies and disordered layers. This leads to the tailoring of the band gap of black TiO2 and causes its light absorption to extend into the visible region.

Stain resistance is one of the important characteristics of exterior wall latex coatings in cities. Adding silica sol to the coating can increase its stain resistance. However, there is currently limited research on the long-term natural exposure test of latex coatings. This paper first investigates the influence of different amounts of silica sol on the elongation, water absorption, and stain resistance of coatings and obtains a better percentage of silica sol addition. Then, heat storage tests were conducted to obtain the viscosity and pH changes of the coating. Afterwards, outdoor natural exposure tests were conducted for up to 12 months to obtain the stain resistance of the coating with the addition of silica sol. The results indicate that the stain resistance value of the coating with added silica sol was significantly better than that without added silica sol after 12 months of natural exposure to sunlight, increasing by 65.8%. The formation of a network structure of Si O-Si bonds in the silica sol enhances the hardness and rigidity of the coating while also allowing it to enter the capillary tubes of the coating caused by prolonged exposure to sunlight, avoiding cracking of the coating and preventing the entry of dust and impurities. Therefore, the stain resistance of the coating is improved. These research results will contribute to the better application of exterior wall latex coatings in architecture.

Plasma jets are increasingly used in plasma medicine, in microelectronics and for surface treatment due to their unique properties, such as low gas temperature and high concentration of active species. This paper presents the results of a study of plasma jets generated by the atmospheric pressure dielectric barrier discharge while passing through it of argon-air, helium-air and helium-water vapor mixtures. Comparison of the plasma jets characteristics shows that the gas flow rate at which the maximum power of UV radiation is achieved increases in the series of He-H2O, He-air, Ar-air. Replacing Ar-air working mixture with He-air mixture leads to an increase in the plasma jet radiation power in ∼ 3 times. The maximum overall radiation power achieved in the He-air plasma jet was 0.07 W. The emission spectra of the plasma jets were identified in the spectral region of 270–900 nm, it was found that the molecular bands of the second positive and first negative systems of nitrogen predominate in the UV region of spectrum and lines of He I or Ar I prevail in the visible region. The distributions of the radiation intensity of excited plasma species along the jet length were measured. The analysis of difference in the emission spectra of the plasma jet in pure Ar and He and in their mixtures with air, as well as in a He-H2O mixture, has been performed taking into account values of the mean electron energy and rate constants of elementary processes in the plasma calculated using the Bolsig + code. The molecular and ionic reactions responsible for emission of radiation in the UV range of spectrum are considered.
