Deposition of TiO2nano-particles on wood surfaces for UV and moisture protection

Abstract: Deposition of TiO 2 nanoparticles on wood surface was realised to improve the wood stability against ultraviolet (UV) light and moisture degradation. Photocatalytic activity of TiO 2 nanoparticles was utilised for protection of the wood surface. TiO 2 nano-particles were achieved by a sol-gel deposition method using EtOH/TiCl4 solution. Dip-coating process and subsequent annealing were used to realise nano-particles on wood surface. This method of deposition was utilised for the conformal covering of the wood … Show more

“…4 For example, metal oxides such as TiO 2 , ZnO, and CeO 2 have been used to protect wood surfaces against ultraviolet light and moisture degradation. 5,6 Calcium and magnesium hydroxides and carbonates, applied using nonaqueous dispersions, were found to be particularly effective preservatives of cellulose-based materials, since they can prevent the degradation catalyzed by acidification processes developing in the wood, which leads to chemical disruption of the cellulose polymer. 7 Copper, zinc, and boron have played an integral part in the development of wood preservatives responsible for extending the service life of wood products against biodegrading organisms such as fungi and termites.…”

“…In particular, due to its surface porosity and chemical heterogeneity, there has been relatively little research in this area for wood [12]. Furthermore, most of the studies performed to date have focused on nanocomposite coatings while binary multicomponent have been rarely studied, most likely due to the greater difficulties involved in the experimental control of the combination of two or more phases [13]. To address these limitations, we analyzed multiple promising polyelectrolytes and nanomaterials for incorporation into thin-film systems through LbL self-assembly.…”
