Deposition of titanium on SiC fibres from chloride melts

Abstract: The present study examined the feasibility of producing titanium matrix composites based on a molten salt fibre coating process. It is demonstrated that sufficiently thick and coherent titanium coatings can be deposited on SiC fibres in LiCl-KCl-TiCl 2 at 700 K. One important aspect of the study was the behaviour of the substrate during electrolysis. Therefore, additional features related to carbon-coated SiC fibres and carbonaceous substrates in general are outlined. The morphologies and microstructures of el… Show more

“…2). The shapes of the CV peaks of the redox reactions are found to be similar to those of the single-element systems (with VCl 3 in the case of ES 1 and ES 3 and with TiCl 2 in a previous study [28]). The steep reduction peak of the reaction (Ti 4+ /Ti 3+ ) can be explained by the formation (O3)…”

“…Such processes can be used for the production of monofilament reinforced titanium matrix composites [29]. The applicability has been demonstrated for titanium [30]. However, the full potential of titanium matrix composites cannot be exploited with a pure titanium matrix.…”
