Depression and Cardiovascular Disease: Role of Nitric Oxide

Abstract: Both depression and cardiovascular disease are major public health problems. Growing evidence shows that depression is a risk factor for the development of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the exact mechanisms underlying the interplay between depression and CAD remain to be elucidated. Depression adversely affects autonomic and hormonal homeostasis, resulting in metabolic abnormalities, inflammation, increased platelet aggregation and endothelial dysfunction. All of these pathological features lead to a… Show more

“…Higher ADMA levels and pulse wave velocities were shown in CAPD patients with depressive symptoms, which also have been documented in several previous studies in patients with depression who have normal renal function [34,35]. This may suggest that endothelial dysfunction [36] or abnormal nitric oxide biosynthesis [37] in patients with depression might be one potential mechanism underlying the increased prevalence of cardiovascular diseases. …”

“…Cognitive findings Z<-2 SD: patients who had average results in at least one cognitive domain of less than two standard deviations (SD) depression (Pinto et al 2008). We suggest that nitric oxide pathway abnormalities could be related to the neuropsychiatric findings in Fabry patients.…”

“…In depressive patients, the L-argininenitric oxide pathway seems to be impaired. Further clinical studies are needed to confirm the beneficial effects of Larginine uptake on amelioration of symptoms in patients with CAD and depression [54].…”
