Depression and heart rate variability in firefighters

Abstract: Introduction:Depression has been found to increase the risk of mortality in patients with coronary artery disease through a mechanism of changing cardiac autonomic tone which is reflected by alteration of heart rate variability indices. This study investigated whether such mechanism existed in firefighters who were at high risk of depression and sudden cardiac death. Methods and results:In total, 107 firefighters were recruited. All completed Beck Depression Inventory and underwent 24-h ambulatory electrocardio… Show more

“…For screening purposes, participants scoring ≥14 points (possible range 0–63) on the BDI-II were considered to be at least mild-to-moderately depressed. Our lab has previously reported that decreased HRV was associated with depressive symptoms among firefighters (Liao et al, 2014). The Cronbach’s alpha for the BDI-II survey in the sample was 0.86.…”

“…Additionally, it has been shown that lower HRV in depressed individuals refl ects impaired integration of brain mechanisms underlying eff ective autonomic and behavioral control (underlying obesity) [11]. Multiple studies indicate that some reduced parameters in HRV analysis values are characteristic of depressed individuals [10,15,21,42]. It has also been shown that lower HRV parameters positively correlate with the severity of the depression symptoms [19].…”

“…Apart from extinguishing fires, firefighters also have additional strenuous work duties, such as rescuing people in dangerous situations and providing first aid and emergency medical services while working irregular hours 1 4. These types of strenuous working conditions place significant strain on firefighters’ musculoskeletal and cardiovascular systems, predisposing them to higher risk of severe injuries and sudden cardiac events while on duty 1 4–10…”
