Depression and Its Phytopharmacotherapy—A Narrative Review

Abstract: Depression is a mental health disorder that develops as a result of complex psycho-neuro-immuno-endocrinological disturbances. This disease presents with mood disturbances, persistent sadness, loss of interest and impaired cognition, which causes distress to the patient and significantly affects the ability to function and have a satisfying family, social and professional life. Depression requires comprehensive management, including pharmacological treatment. Because pharmacotherapy of depression is a long-ter… Show more

“…MDD is a heterogeneous disorder, both in terms of symptoms ranging from anhedonia to cognitive impairment and pathophysiology, with a combination of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. , Therefore, it is unlikely that depressive symptoms can be completely controlled by a drug with a single mechanism of action. Pharmacological therapy for MDD is based on medications discovered in the 1960s and the early 1970s, SSRIs, and serotonin-NE reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) .…”

“…Given the symptomatic and pathophysiological complexity of MDD, multitarget compounds are being explored as new therapeutic alternatives for this disorder. 24 Therefore, this study investigated the contribution of dopaminergic (D 1 , D 2 , and D 3 ) and noradrenergic (α 1 , α 2 , and β) receptors to the antidepressant-like action of SePB in male mice. However, for a compound to be considered a potential new drug candidate, it is crucial to explore its pharmacokinetic profile.…”

“…John's wort, saffron crocus, lemon balm and lavender or less known in European ethnopharmacology, roseroot, ginkgo, Korean ginseng, borage, brahmi, mimosa tree and magnolia bark and their antidepressant activity with similar mechanisms to those observed in synthetic antidepressants [15]. Advanced non-pharmacological techniques, such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) or electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), might be also required in severe depression treatment.…”

“…Depression is a mental disorder that develops from complex psycho-neurological-immune-endocrine disorders and is clinically manifested as severe emotional disorders, such as persistent sadness, loss of interest, and suicidal behavior. [1] According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of 2017, more than 300 million people worldwide suffered from major depressive disorder, and this number continues to increase, with an annual incidence of about 3%. [2,3] Despite significant efforts in the treatment of depression, there is a need to accelerate the pace of research on depression to reduce the heavy burden of depression.…”
