“…As expected, bullying victimization, exposure to family violence, impulsivity, and pro-bullying attitudes were all positively associated with aggressive behavior (Hypothesis 1 supported). These findings are consistent with prior literature such that adolescents who were victims of bullying and exposed to family violence were more likely to engage in aggressive behavior (Ferguson et al, 2008; T. I. Lawrence, Mcfield, et al, 2022; Machimbarrena et al, 2019).…”

“…According to Gilchrist et al (2022) , one of the pathways into substance use-related IPV revealed that perpetrators reported using substances as a coping mechanism to help them deal with their emotional pain and mental health issues caused by unresolved previous trauma. Similarly, the self-medication hypothesis states that individuals with PTSD are more likely to develop ADUPs in light of a tendency to drink or use drugs to alleviate PTSD symptoms and cope with difficult internal experiences ( Hawn et al, 2020 ; Khantzian, 1997 ; Lawrence et al, 2023 ). These findings underscore the need to address the function of substance use in intervention programs for IPV perpetrators with ADUPs.…”

“…This finding partially coincides with prior literature, which suggests that adolescents who use substances often report psychophysiological symptoms (Escobar et al, 2010; Fishbein et al, 2016; Hassan & Ali, 2011; Potter et al, 2008). One explanation for this could be although adolescents often use substances to cope with psychiatric symptoms (Laudet et al, 2004; Lawrence et al, 2022; Narendorf et al, 2017), at times, there are negative affective responses following substance use (Anand et al, 2017; Ramo & Brown, 2008), which could trigger anxiety and somatic symptoms.…”
