Depressive symptoms among older residents at nursing homes in Taiwan

Abstract: There exists a high rate of depressive symptoms among older residents at nursing homes. It is imperative that a proper identification and its correspondent treatment for this health problem on the older residents are required. In late life, to maintain a higher level of quality of life, it is important to suggest that the health providers should regularly screen older people to increase the likelihood of diagnosis and improved treatment of late-life depressive symptoms.

“…In terms of depression, it was surprising to find that the total scores of the TDQ in both experimental and control groups were less than 19, indicating that participants had no tendency toward depression (Lee et al, 2000). This result was different from the prevalence statistics reported by Lin et al (2007) and Gueldner et al (2001) that a high prevalence rate of depression occurred among elderly nursing home residents. This group of participants was rather old in age and has multiple morbidities.…”

“…Among these symptoms, depression is a costly and potentially disabling condition affecting a considerable proportion of older adults. Lin, Wang, and Huang (2007) reported a depression prevalence rate of 81.8% among elderly nursing home residents. Gueldner et al (2001) claimed that older adults who live in nursing homes have a higher prevalence of depression than those living in the community.…”

“…Perhaps residents in mainstream NHs have less engagement with staff, but this is offset by more family visits, which may protect against depression, especially in Chinese older people who place a high value on the principle of filial piety (Lin et al, 2007).…”
