Depressive symptoms and olfactory function in older adults

Abstract: Aims: Neuroimaging studies suggest a significant overlap between brain regions involved in the regulation of olfaction and mood. The aim of the present study was to search for correlations between depressive symptomatology measured by the 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and olfactory function assessed with Sniffin' Sticks in non-demented older adults (aged 53-79 years). Methods: Taste detection thresholds were also measured by means of electrogustometry on the anterior tongue. Results:No correlation wa… Show more

“…This paradigm has been used to study reduced liking in depressed patients and shows mixed findings in terms of sensitivity. While some studies show reduced sensitivity to pleasant gustatory and olfactory stimuli (Berlin et al, 1998; Pause et al, 2001; Lombion-Pouthier et al, 2006; Clepce et al, 2010; Negoias et al, 2010), other studies report normal levels of identification and perception thresholds in depressed patients (Scinska et al, 2004, 2008; Swiecicki et al, 2009; Clepce et al, 2010). …”

“…The cancer exhibits a wide spectrum of behavior, ranging from indolent progression, with patients surviving Ͼ20 years, to rapid widespread metastatic disease, with survival durations of only a few months. Five-year survival rates are reported to be in the range of 45%-62% [7][8][9][10]. The Kadish staging system divides pa- tients into: A, limited to the nasal cavity; B, lesions involving the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses; and C, extension beyond the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses.…”

“…Radiation therapy has been used in conjunction with surgery, either pre-or postoperatively in some centers, and as definitive treatment for patients with unresectable disease. In some centers, chemotherapy, alone or in combination with radiation, has been used in the neoadjuvant setting to downstage tumors prior to surgery [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14].…”
