Depressive Symptoms in Clinical and Incipient Alzheimer’s Disease

Abstract: Summary The updated diagnostic criteria for Alzheimer's disease (AD) distinguish three stages: dementia, symptomatic pre-dementia [i.e. mild cognitive impairment (MCI)], and asymptomatic pre-dementia. Although AD is primarily associated with cognitive deficits, co-morbid depressive symptoms frequently occur at each stage. Depression in AD dementia is qualitatively different from depression in cognitively intact and/or younger populations, and may be less responsive to established interventions. In MCI, depress… Show more

“…[73] Moreover, depressive symptoms have been shown to decrease with the development of AD. [74] One factor that has been shown to impact both mood and AD risk is diet. Nevertheless, the relationship between these three elements is incompletely understood.…”

“…According to previous studies, anxious-depressive-like behavior worked as both a predictor and a causal factor contributing to AD progression [9,289]. In clinical studies, AD patients had significantly increased anxious-depressive symptoms, and individuals with psychological distress or anxiety are more likely to be diagnosed with AD [289][290][291][292]. Moreover, anxious-depressive behaviors are closely related to extensive amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles [9,290,293].…”

“…Specifically, there is degeneration of the cholinergic basal forebrain in AD, which may reduce cholinergic tone, and this reduced tone may contribute to overall brain neuromodulation including that needed for mood regulation. Relatedly, it has been noted that MDD in AD is qualitatively different in some regard from depression in cognitively healthy and/or younger individuals, with AD-MDD individuals having more prominent motivational symptoms and less pronounced affective symptoms than MDD-alone individuals (Hsiao and Teng, 2013 ).…”
