Deriving optimal operation of reservoir proposing improved artificial bee colony algorithm: standard and constrained versions

Abstract: In this paper, one of the newest meta-heuristic algorithms, named artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm, is used to solve the single-reservoir operation optimization problem. The simple and hydropower reservoir operation optimization problems of Dez reservoir, in southern Iran, have been solved here over 60, 240, and 480 monthly operation time periods considering two different decision variables. In addition, to improve the performance of this algorithm, two improved artificial bee colony algorithms have been … Show more

“…Generally, the objective function of the reservoir operation problem can be defined as minimizing the cost or loss or maximizing the benefit. In this research, minimizing the summation of water release losses in comparison with the downstream water demand is defined as the objective function of the problem (Soghrati and Moeini, 2020):…”

“…Each reservoir will have unique objectives and constraints and there is no standard algorithm for all problems because each reservoir has different physical problems and operating characteristics [4]. Several algorithms that have been used for optimization reservoir operations include Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) [5], [6], Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) [7], [8] and Bee Colony Algorithm (BCA) [1], [9]. The development of these algorithms was inspired by animal behavior or swarm intelligence.…”

“…Here, the reservoir operation rule and policies of the Zayandehroud dam reservoir are determined to satisfy the downstream water demand without considering social issues such as farmers' behavior in anthropogenic droughts condition. Therefore, extending and developing the proposed methods to provide future insights for policy-makers and assess the performance of complex water resources systems such as the methods ofPouladi et al (2019 and2020) is an essential issue, and therefore, it should be considered for future studies.…”
