Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the breast: A case report

Abstract: Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a rare malignant tumor of subcutaneous tissue characterized by slow infiltrative growth. The tumor occurs in patients of all ages, with the highest frequency occurring between the second and the fifth decades of age. Genetically, DFSP is characterized by a reciprocal translocation t(17;22)(q22;q13), or more often, as a supernumerary ring chromosome involving chromosomes 17 and 22. Standard treatment of a localized tumor is surgical excision with wide margins. In the pr… Show more

“…These mammography findings are not specific and hence, breast DFSP can mimic a benign breast lesion such as fibroadenoma, sebaceous cyst or an abscess. 1 , 4 , 5 , 9 , 15 In the current case, the mammography findings were consistent with findings reported in the literature with a skin-based well-defined lesion with no microcalcification nor architectural distortion, mimicking a sebaceous cyst.…”

“…Another useful ultrasonographic finding that can help to distinguish DFSP is the presence of a peripheral hyperechoic rim in the subcutaneous tissue that represents a mixture of tumour cells and fibrous tissue infiltrating the subcutaneous fat. 1,2,4,5,9,11 On magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), DSFP has no specific features and appears as a well-defined nodule or mass that is T1 isointense to the muscle and shows homogenous or heterogenous enhancement on post-contrast examination. However, owing to its high spatial resolution and high tissue characterisation, MRI is very helpful in delineation of tumour extent and evaluating the anatomical relation of the tumour to adjacent structures.…”

“…When difficult to diagnose, FISH analysis of the COL1A1-PDGF β fusion gene using routine biopsy specimens is a quick and convenient method [ 37 ]. In reported 5 cases of breast DFSP with gene detection, 4 cases presented the COL1A1-PDGF β fusion gene [ 9 , 23 , 38 , 39 ], another presented the PDGF β gene rearrangement [ 40 ].…”

“…Dermatofibrosarcoma can affect all the parts of the body, but its preferred seats are the trunk 50 to 60%, the limbs 20 to 30%, the head 15 to 20% [6,7]. Its mammary location is very rare [12][13][14].…”
