Dermatomyofibromas presenting in pediatric patients: clinicopathologic characteristics and differential diagnosis

Abstract: Dermatomyofibroma represents a rare benign fibroblastic/ myofibroblastic cutaneous tumor that mostly occurs in young adult women. It has been seldom reported in pediatric patients. “…Several notable characteristics of the dermatomyofibromas of these two patients deviate from previously reported cases of this tumor in children. Although the vast majority are asymptomatic , both of our patients experienced symptoms—one with constant, mild pruritus and the other with pain. Furthermore, the size of patient 1's dermatomyofibroma (4.5 cm × 4 cm) makes it the second‐largest lesion reported in a child.…”

“…In adulthood, dermatomyofibroma has a female predominance and is typically located on the shoulder and upper body, but in childhood, the majority of dermatomyofibromas are found in boys, with the neck being the most common location . Rose and Brocker proposed that the tendency of dermatomyofibroma to arise in prepubescent boys and postpubescent women may suggest that female hormonal factors are a factor.…”
