Dermatomyositis and/or polymyositis as a paraneoplastic manifestation of ovarian cancer: a systematic review

Abstract: Dermatomyositis (DM) is defined as an autoimmune inflammatory disease that affects the skin, the blood vessels and the muscles. It typically presents with erythema affecting mostly the eyes and the hands as well as proximal muscle weakness. It has been also correlated with various types of cancer, including ovarian cancer. A systematic PubMed and Scopus search was conducted. A total of 110 women were included in our review. The median age of the patients was 52.5 years (8-85). The most frequent histological ty… Show more

“…10 Los pacientes mayores de años corren mayor riesgo, y la incidencia de cáncer disminuye a medida que aumentan los años desde el diagnóstico de la DM/PM. 11 En varios estudios han identificado factores que están asociados con un riesgo relativamente menor de malignidad en pacientes con miositis. 12 Estos incluyen enfermedad pulmonar intersticial (EPI) artritis/artralgias, fenómeno de Raynaud, anticuerpos anti-ENA y anticuerpo anti Jo 1.…”

“…DM presents mainly in heliotrope erythema, Gottron's papules, telangiectasias, and other dermatological manifestations. Polymyositis (PM) is defined by symmetrical muscle weakness, elevated levels of muscle-derived enzymes, and is diagnosed through histopathological and electromyographic findings (4). The association between malignancy and DM is well known, and a coexisting malignancy is present in 20-25% of DM cases (5).…”

“…As a possible paraneoplastic disorder, DM is correlated with various types of cancer, including gastrointestinal cancer and nasopharyngeal cancer [ 4 ]. The significant relationship between underlying ovarian cancer and dermatomyositis has recently been studied [ 5 - 6 ], with a prevalence of 13.3% [ 5 ].…”
