Dermatoscopy for the rapid diagnosis of Talaromyces marneffei infection: a case report

Abstract: Background: Talaromyces marneffei is a thermally dimorphic fungus endemic in southeast Asia. It predominantly occurs in both immunocompromised and immunosuppressed patients and can be fatal if diagnosis and treatment are delayed. The clinical manifestations of T. marneffei infection are nonspecific and rapid diagnosis of T. marneffei infection remains challenging. Case presentation: A 24-year-old man came to our outpatient department with the sign of common skin lesions. The lesions were cuticolor follicular p… Show more

“…9 Recently, diagnosis of PSM by highthroughput sequencing and dermatoscopy has been reported. 10 The present case was a patient from a non-epidemic area who was immunocompetent and showed the symptoms of cough and hemoptysis. Tumor marker levels were increased, while a fungal test and blood culture were negative.…”

“…Talaromyces marneffei infection is a systemic mycosis often involving the skin with nonspecific lesions that mainly affects people with severe immunodeficiency (e.g., AIDS) [ 147 ]. Dermoscopy has been reported to be helpful in providing clues for early diagnosis of skin lesions, including homogeneous round whitish background (granulomas comprised of yeast ingested histiocytes) along with central keratin plug or hemorrhagic ulcer surrounded by punctiform, tufted, and hairpin vessels [ 147 , 148 ]. Moreover, Xu et al.…”
