Dermoid Inclusion Cyst Following Percutaneous Needle Fasciotomy: A Novel Complication

Abstract: We present the case of a fit and well 62-year-old male with Dupuytren's disease in the right hand who underwent percutaneous needle fasciotomy (PNF) for a moderate flexion contracture of the right little finger. 18 months later he developed a pain-free soft tissue swelling at the distal previous needling site. A fasciectomy procedure identified a cyst within the pre-tendinous cord, which was confirmed as a dermoid inclusion cyst on histological analysis. Dermoid inclusion cysts may occur in the hands at the si… Show more

“…The authors located only one article describing a single “dermoid” cyst post PNF and two papers describing epidermal inclusion cysts following open fasciectomy. 7–9 To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first presentation of multiple palmar epidermal inclusion cysts following PNF.…”

“…Another way to adapt the procedure to reduce the likelihood of embedding epithelial material under the skin would be to use smaller needles. 5 However, the association between Dupuytren disease and cystic formations is uncommon, and further research is needed to elucidate potential causal relationships and therapeutic consequences.…”

“…To date, the literature has only documented a solitary case of one dermoid cyst reported by Reid et al and two epidermoid cysts detailed by Turner et al, subsequent to percutaneous needle fasciotomy. 5,6 In addition, there are two cases of epidermoid cysts after open dermofasciectomy in the literature. 7,8 The publications that met the inclusion criteria and the case presented here are summarized in Table 1.…”
