Dermoscopic Changes in Melanocytic Naevi in Children during Digital Follow-up

Abstract: The aim of this study was to investigate the dermoscopic changes in acquired melanocytic naevi in a large paediatric population over an interval of several years. Images of 717 melanocytic naevi were obtained from 160 consecutive patients. Dermoscopic pigment pattern changes were observed in one of two lesions after a follow-up of one year, in 34 of 295 lesions (11.5%) after 2 years, in 40 of 190 lesions (21.1%) after 3 years, in 40 of 141 lesions (28.4%) after 4 years, in 5 of 37 lesions (13.5%) after 5 years… Show more

“…The changes we have observed-from globular to globular-reticular pattern-are in accord with those observed in other nevi. 16 The risk of malignant transformation of kissing nevus of the penis seems to be low, having been observed in only one case. 14 Therefore, aesthetics and functionality are primary considerations in the management of these patients.…”

“…12,31,37 A similar trend was observed in a pediatric cohort study from Italy. 38 Cross-sectional analysis of the dermoscopic patterns of nevi on the trunk by age is consistent with these longitudinal observations (Table 1). …”

“…The developed image capturing system was found to be able to provide quality dermoscopic images helpful for the differentiation of melanocytic from non-melanocytic lesions as well as for the analysis of dermoscopic features. Specifically, we identified typical melanocytic patterns (globular and reticular pattern [11]) in melanocytic naevi, and absence of melanocytic patterns in all haemangiomas. The presented two-step analysis algorithm of skin lesions confirmed the findings on clinical inspection and provided a standard approach to dermoscopic examination even in difficult cases.…”
