PurposeThis study aimed to determine the expectations of students from mathematics teachers in the planning phase of lesson study (LS) in mathematics classrooms.Design/methodology/approachThis study reported only a part of large-scale action research. The participants were Grade 8 students selected by the convenience sampling method. The data were obtained through open-ended questions. The content analysis method was used to analyze the data.FindingsFour categories emerged: connection, technology-supported teaching, use of concrete materials, practice, and teacher behavior and teaching style.Research limitations/implicationsThis study reveals how students in a different culture and education system, such as Türkiye, want to learn mathematics in the LS process of Japanese origin. It also gives some important clues for applying LS in a different culture.Practical implicationsThis study may attract the attention of educational stakeholders who want to implement LS in mathematics classrooms by considering student perspectives.Social implicationsDue to the nature of LS, this study may emphasize teacher–student and teacher–teacher interactions. Thus, it can draw attention to the importance of social learning environments where students take responsibility and interact.Originality/valueThis study emphasizes the importance of listening to student voices in LS. Some ideas about mathematics teaching in Turkey should also be given. Finally, it can provide a good basis for understanding and comparing LS practices in different cultures and understandings.

Garden-based teaching plays an important role in bringing the formal and informal learning environments together and is applied at different educational levels. Teachers are expected to use multiple teaching technique in different learning environments align with the contemporary educational approaches. However, educational research shows that teacher education programs still mainly focus on the classrooms and teachers are not prepared or do not feel prepared to take their students out of the classroom. This case study aimed to introduce the educational use of school gardens to the pre-service science teachers and to improve their subject knowledge, the subject teaching competency and provide the confidence of teaching outside the classroom, school garden. The study was conducted in a public university with the participation of 38 pre-service science teachers in the 2014-2015 academic year. Three preservice science teachers prepared the lecture based on the "lesson study" model and gave the lecture to their classmates in an outdoor learning environment (campus garden) enriched with the mobile technology. The preservice teachers stated that they are aware of the importance of using the scientific name of plants, but they do not feel themselves competent. The results show that the lesson study model can contribute to the preservice teachers' subject knowledge and professional competencies. The results of the study are expected to contribute to the preservice science teachers' awareness of the outdoor learning environments, support the practice-based subject teaching and their general professional competencies.

The aim of the study was to test the effect of teachers' professional development upon students' mathematics academic achievement levels with the help of lesson study. In this manner, the study aimed at increasing students' mathematics learning levels via lesson study. Action research was used as research method in the study. The sample of the study was consisted of 32 6 th -grade students who were studying at the school having lower academic success. Four different learning outcomes about "natural numbers activities" were tried to develop in the process of implementation of the study. The achievement test called as "the achievement test about natural numbers activities" was used as data collection instrument which was developed by the researchers. According to the findings of the study, there was significant difference between academic successes of the students. Lesson study is designed to support students' learning by choosing a lesson, a subject and an aim. According to the study's findings and results, it was seen that the lesson plan, research lesson, new teaching strategies and materials, which were prepared with different views altogether, made the students' learning levels and qualities increase and also develop reasoning.
