Describing and Facilitating Productive Teaching Talk in a Faculty Online Learning Community

Abstract: This paper presents our preliminary work towards being able to describe productive conversations in the context of faculty talking about teaching in a Faculty Online Learning Community (FOLC) as well as facilitator moves that lead to productive conversations. We present an analysis of a short video clip from a particularly productive FOLC meeting in which a rich discussion of pedagogical issues occurs. In order to understand why this conversation was productive, we describe the types of talk present and the fu… Show more

“…In reviewing recordings of virtual meetings and analyzing asynchronous communications it is clear that deliberate attention is needed to ensure the most productive outcomes. We have done some analysis of virtual meetings [62] and asynchronous communications [63] to better understand facilitator moves and structural supports that encourage desired outcomes. Initial analysis indicates that helpful facilitator moves include the facilitator withholding their own opinion to encourage others to share, giving agency by focusing the conversation on ideas of participants, and encouraging participants to elaborate on their ideas.…”

“…Of the handful of studies on STEM FLCs and FOLCs at the university level (e.g., Corrales et al, 2020;Dancy et al, 2019;Elliot et al, 2016;Price et al, 2021;Tinnell et al, 2019), only one brief paper focuses on facilitation (Lau et al, 2018). We are not aware of any literature examining how faculty members approach their facilitation role, nor how and why they change their practice over time as the needs of the learning community change.…”

“…More recently, faculty online learning communities (FOLCs) have been used as geographically distributed, discipline-specific FLCs that support and provide resources for faculty implementing Research-Based Instructional Strategies (RBIS) to enhance student learning (Cox, 2004;Dancy et al, 2019;Price et al, 2021). Facilitators use various strategies to achieve the goals of their communities alongside the needs of the faculty members (Andrews-Larson et al, 2017;Lau et al, 2018;Ortquist-Ahrens & Torosyan, 2009;van der Want & Meirink, 2020;Zhang et al, 2011). This article will broadly explore the ways that facilitator goals and strategies can change over time and possible change mechanisms.…”

“…During their online meetings, FOLC members troubleshoot issues with the course, curriculum, and/or pedagogical strategy they are trying to implement. These conversations are often rich with pedagogical ideas and advice [6,9,10].…”
