Description and Comparative Genomics of Macrococcus caseolyticus subsp. hominis subsp. nov., Macrococcus goetzii sp. nov., Macrococcus epidermidis sp. nov., and Macrococcus bohemicus sp. nov., Novel Macrococci From Human Clinical Material With Virulence Potential and Suspected Uptake of Foreign DNA by Natural Transformation

Abstract: The genus Macrococcus is a close relative of the genus Staphylococcus. Whilst staphylococci are widespread as human pathogens, macrococci have not yet been reported from human clinical specimens. Here we investigated Gram-positive and catalase-positive cocci recovered from human clinical material and identified as Macrococcus sp. by a polyphasic taxonomic approach and by comparative genomics. Relevant phenotypic, genotypic and chemotaxonomic methods divided the analyzed strains into two separate clusters withi… Show more

“…caseolyticus strains are available in the public database and the accession numbers are presented in Table 1 . Details of genome sequencing and assembly were previously reported ( Mašlaňová et al, 2018 ; Mazhar et al, 2019 ). Functional genome distribution (FGD) was conducted on the five M. caseolyticus subsp.…”

“…The bacterial toxin gene (yqfA) forms pores in the membrane and induces the death of the host cell (Dupont et al 2007;von Rhein et al 2009;Mašlaňová et al 2018), but NRS-1 distinctly stimulates this gene to form pores and might act as a glyphosate sensor which could rapidly induce stress signaling pathways in glyphosate stress. Lipopolysaccharides (ibpB, arnB) are the structures of the cell that communicate with the environment through structural modification (Lloret et al 1995;De Castro et al 2008), and the transcripts of ibpB and arnB are thought to sense the (Luo and Levine 2009;Nandi et al 2005).…”

“…caseolyticus has been isolated from mastitis in dairy cattle [ 2 , 3 ], canine dermatitis [ 4 ], canine otitis [ 2 ], an outbreak high-mortality systemic infection in broiler chickens [ 5 ], ovine abscesses [ 6 ] and cases of embryo mortality in greater white-fronted geese ( Anser albifrons ) [ 7 ]. Macrococcus canis has also been isolated from a range of canine infections [ 4 ] and a small number of isolates of different Macrococcus species have come from human clinical samples, suggesting a potential role, albeit infrequently, in human infections as well [ 8 ].…”
