Description of 14 new capsular types of Streptococcus suis

Abstract: Fourteen new capsular types of Streptococcus suis (types 9 to 22) are described. All reference strains are morphologically and biochemically similar to types previously described. Reference strain types 9 to 13, 15, 16, and 22 were isolated from diseased pigs, whereas types 17 to 19 and 21 came from clinically healthy pigs; type 14 was isolated from a human case of meningitis, and type 20 was isolated from a diseased calf. The group T streptococcus of de Moor has been included in the typing system as type 15. … Show more

“…Strep. suis is a very heterogenic species in which 34 serotypes have been described (Gottschalk et al 1989;Gottschalk et al 1991a;Gottschalk et al 1991b), but only few of these are commonly present in lesions. Serotype 2, the most important clinical serotype, was not found in the present investigation.…”

“…After being introduced into E. coli strain MC1061 (Casadaban & Cohen, 1980), the direction and sequences of the cloned genes were verified by PCR and sequencing. The resultant expression vectors were then introduced into unencapsulated S. suis isolates, and the restoration of capsular expression was examined by the coagglutination test and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) as described previously (Gottschalk et al, 1989;Jacques et al, 1990;Han et al, 2001;Lakkitjaroen et al, 2011).…”

“…In humans, S. suis type 2 can cause endocarditis, septicemia, meningitis and permanent hearing loss [1,19]. To date 35 serotypes of S. suis have been described (types 1/2, and 1 through 34) [3,4,5,12,19]. Type 2 is the most often isolated and the most frequently associated with dis-ease.…”
