Description of Azospira restricta sp. nov., a nitrogen-fixing bacterium isolated from groundwater

Abstract: A novel, Gram-negative bacterial strain, SUA2T, isolated from groundwater, was characterized using a polyphasic approach. Cells are Gram-negative, non-spore-forming, straight to curved rods with a single polar flagellum. Strain SUA2T is oxidase- and catalase-positive and is able to fix nitrogen. Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate storage granules are produced. Dominant fatty acids when grown in R2A and VM ethanol media for 72 h at 37 °C are C16 : 0, C16 : 1 ω7c, C17 : 0 cyclo, C10 : 0 3-OH, C18 : 1 … Show more

“…These Gram-negative β-Proteobacteria are non-spore-forming with a polar flagellum . Currently, there are three described species of Azospira and a number of strains for Azospira oryzae [56], [57], [58]. This genus is of interest due to its potential for use in bioremediation.…”

“…Azospira restricta was originally isolated from groundwater, and it has been also known as an oligotroph capable of producing nutrient storage polymers including poly-beta-hydroxybutyrate (Bae et al 2007). It remains to be clarified which environmental factors select and shape the oligotrophic bacterial populations in the perturbed MBR.…”

“…1,2 A nitrate concentration of lower than 10 mg L À1 is designated by the US Environmental Protection Agency and 50 mg L À1 by the World Health Organization and European Economic Community to prevent the risks to human health. 3 Therefore, the social and environmental concerns have led the development of strategies to reduce nitrate concentration.…”
