Description of four Apiotrichum and two Cutaneotrichosporon species isolated from guano samples from bat-inhabited caves in Japan

Abstract: Four new yeast species belonging to the genus Apiotrichum and two new yeast species belonging to Cutaneotrichosporon are described for strains isolated from guano samples from bat-inhabited caves in Japan. In 2005, we reported these isolates as Trichosporon species based on sequence analyses of the D1/D2 domain of large subunit (LSU) rRNA genes according to available basidiomycetous yeast classification criteria; however, to date, they have not been officially published as new species with descriptions. Their … Show more

“…The presence of yeasts in the caves was related with the frequentation of people and animals [35]. Cutaneotrichosporon, Trichosporon and Cryptococcus species have been isolated from bat guano in caves in Japan [36,37]. Cutaneotrichosporon moniliiforme was the most abundant species in Gruta de las Maravillas (Sala de las Conchas) in summer, which was also identified in the air of Castañar de Ibor Cave [38].…”

“…Both yeast and hyphal cells were observed during vegetative growth of strain HIS471(Fig. S1 A, B), as was the case for the C. cavernicola standard strains [ 15 ]. The identical ITS sequence also supported a close relationship with the C. cavernicola standard strains (Fig.…”

“…Gene model annotation based on both de novo prediction and RNA-seq hints predicted approximately 7,300 to 7,800 genes (Table 2 ), a relatively smaller number than in C. oleaginosus [ 20 ] and Trichosporon asahii [ 21 ], but in the range for Trichosporonales spp. [ 15 ]. The number of genes in C. spelunceum HIS016 was smaller than in other strains, as was the genome size.…”

“…Currently, the Trichosporon genus comprises twelve species, with six of them capable of causing a diverse range of manifestations in human hosts, including superficial mycoses (e.g., white piedra, onychomycosis), summer-type hypersensitivity pneumonitis, esophageal lesions, fungemia, endocarditis, and other deep-seated infections [ 3 5 , 7 , 14 , 16 18 ]. Trichosporon asahii is the predominant species causing human invasive trichosporonosis, followed by Trichosporon inkin and Trichosporon asteroides [ 2 , 3 , 6 , 8 , 19 ].…”
