Description ofNeoholothelegen. nov. (Araneae, Theraphosidae, Schismatothelinae)

Abstract: The new genus Neoholothele is herein described based on the results of a recent phylogenetic analysis. This phylogeny, which included representatives of all Theraphosidae subfamilies, showed that the genus Holothele, as hitherto defined, does not comprise a monophyletic group. Neoholothele gen. nov. is diagnosed by the following features: males and females with dark carapace and golden cephalic region; females with striped color pattern on the abdomen dorsum and long and slender spermathecae receptacula; males… Show more

“…Guadanucci (2014), using morphological characters in a phylogeny including spiders from all subfamilies of Theraphosidae placed Holothele rondoni new synonym of H. longipes in a group named Ischnocolinae sensu stricto. Other species formerly included in Holothele fell into a group named Schismatothelinae Guadanucci, 2014, which led to some taxonomic transfers and descriptions by Guadanucci & Wienmann (2014, 2015.…”

“…The genus, originally established as monotypic, was described based on a female from Caracas, Venezuela, named H. recta Karsch, 1879 as type-species. The inclusion of all other species currently within the genus is due to subsequent transfers or descriptions, along with other species that have already been removed from Holothele in the past years (Guadanucci et al 2007;Guadanucci & Weinmann 2014, 2015. Raven (1985) considered Holothele as a senior synonym of Schismatothele Karsch, 1879, Euthycaelus Simon, 1889, Hemiercus Simon, 1903, Scopelobates Simon, 1903and Dryptopelmides Strand, 1907.…”

“…He identified the "core group" (Ischnocolinae sensu stricto) to include the type genus of the subfamily (Ischnocolus) as well as Acanthopelma, Holothele, Reichlingia and Trichopelma (Guadanucci, 2014). Some other Ischnocolinae (sensu lato) were placed in a separate clade, including Schismatothele plus others including several former Holothele species later transferred to other genera (including Neoholothele), as the newly erected subfamily of Schismatothelinae (Guadanucci, 2014;Guadanucci & Weinmann, 2015). Remaining ischnocoline genera, such as Heterothele, Nesiergus and Catumiri, were dispersed across the phylogeny, and their phylogenetic affinities remained largely unresolved.…”

“…Based on all morphological characters, Guadanucci (2014) proposed the subfamily Schismatothelinae, which comprise the genera Euthycaelus Simon, 1889; Neoholothele Guadanucci & Weinmann, 2015;Schismatothele Karsch, 1879;Sickius Soares & Camargo, 1947 and Guyruita Guadanucci et al,…”
