Description of immature stages of Culicoides peregrinus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae),a potent vector of bluetongue virus

Abstract: Mellor et al., 2009). This species, first described by Kieffer (1910) from Puri, has since been reported in various parts of India (Prasad et al., 2009). The pupa was described by Mayer (1934) from Sumatra, whereas the egg, larva, and pupa were reported by Narladkar et al. (1991) without detailed taxonomy and illustrations based on recent terminologies. Based on adult morphology, Nandi (2014) revised the genus and recognized 11 species under the subgenus Hoffmania, including C. peregrinus. Light trap data reve… Show more

“…One of the major obstacles is the lack of knowledge about the mating conditions required by Culicoides species (Jamnback, 1961;Kettle, 1977;Veronesi et al, 2009). Finally, research using different diets and substrates for both adults and larvae (Harsha & Mazumdar, 2015) and investigating development at different temperatures deserves attention.…”

“…Currently only two studies have explored the bionomics of Culicoides vectors: studies on Culicoides peregrinus Kieffer in India comparing various food sources and substrates (Harsha & Mazumdar, 2015) and the contributions of Veronesi et al (2009) on C. imicola in South Africa.…”

“…Mud-broth and yeast solutions were added to the rearing plates every successive day until the appearance of pupal stages following Harsha and Mazumdar (2015). Larval instars were differentiated following Harsha et al (2017). Thereafter, the late pupae were carefully picked from culture plates and placed in previously mentioned glass vials for adult emergence.…”

“…Aside from their value in distinguishing species, the character states of pupae may be useful in cladistic analyses of these taxa. Recent studies have produced very thorough pupal descriptions of Culicoides pupae and have provided a template for future descriptions (Nevill et al 2009;Ronderos et al 2013;Anjos-Santos et al 2014;Shults et al 2016;Harsha et al 2017).…”
