Description of Kribbella italica sp. nov., isolated from a Roman catacomb

Abstract: A novel actinobacterium, strain BC637 T , was isolated from a biodeteriogenic biofilm sample collected in 2009 in the Saint Callixstus Roman catacomb. The strain was found to belong to the genus Kribbella by analysis of the 16S rRNA gene. Phylogenetic analysis using the 16S rRNA gene and the gyrB, rpoB, relA, recA and atpD concatenated gene sequences showed that strain BC637 T was most closely related to the type strains of Kribbella lupini and Kribbella endophytica. DNA-DNA hybridization experiments confirmed… Show more

“…Otherwise, in the darkness, white biofilms of different consistency and origin were found [ 16 , 25 , 47 , 48 ]. In all cases, a high diversity of heterotrophic microflora was recorded, and several new bacterial species were described [ 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 ], confirming that the unexplored and/or extreme niches are reservoirs for unknown entities [ 5 , 55 , 56 , 57 , 58 ].…”

“…In general, actinomycetes isolated from the pine forest were the most proficient in synthesising PGP-metabolites, as shown by five isolates that were most active in producing ammonia, namely S. pinistramenti SF28 T , strains close to the type strains of S celluloflavus and S. sanglieri and ones considered to be members of presumptive novel species of Streptacidiphilus and Streptomyces . Isolates 1HA1 and 5R2A3, near relatives of Kribbella italica ( Everest et al, 2015 ) and Micromonospora acroterricola ( Carro et al, 2019 ), respectively, were particularly gifted in their ability to produce IAA, as was isolate SA8, another close relative of S. sanglieri .…”
