Description of Rotavirus F in Broilers from Brazilian Poultry Farms

Abstract: Rotaviruses are segmented double-stranded RNA viruses that cause gastroenteritis in mammals and birds. Here we describe the first partial nucleotide sequences of the structural protein VP6 from the genomes of group F rotaviruses that were detected in 5 out of 53 fecal samples (9.43%) from healthy broilers from Brazilian poultry farms based on reverse-transcriptase-PCR with primers designed for this study. The findings support the development of molecular detection systems, which can be used for the assessment … Show more

“…In contrast to the observation that the AvRV-F species occurs less frequently in broilers (Beserra and Gregori 2014 ; Bezerra et al 2012 ; Otto et al 2006 ) and is excreted in lower titers (Mascarenhas et al 2016 ), in our study, the AvRV-F species was the most detected. Besides, in Brazil, AvRV-F had only been detected by RT-PCR assay with rates ranging from 9.4% to 18.5% (Beserra and Gregori 2014 ; Mascarenhas et al 2016 ). This is the first report to identify AvRV-F by electrophoretic profile on ss-PAGE in Brazil.…”

“…RVs are widely distributed in Brazil, and have been described in animals (both young and adults) such as cattle 105 , birds 106 , and pigs 107,108 . In rodents, there is a single report of RVA associated with swine production 109 .…”

“…Although RVA is predominant across all host species, RVD is more common in poultry [ 46 ]. RVF and RVG have only been occasionally reported [ 47 ]. After analysis by PAGE, the genomic RNA segments initially clustered into four regions, I to IV.…”
