“…The uncertainty of the underlying cross-section library is dominated by the uncertainty of the photoionization cross sections, estimated to be about 2%, 32 resulting in an estimated uncertainty of 1%-2% in the total linear attenuation coefficient, tot , in the 125 I energy range. The dosimetric effects of cross-section data uncertainty can be estimated by performing point source simulations with two different cross-section libraries 14,33 differing by known amounts. For a 30 keV source, a 1.5% uncertainty in tot for water results in dose-rate uncertainties of 1.2% and 4.5% at 1 and 5 cm, respectively.…”

“…9 MABDOSE uses the DLC-99 library, updated in 1983. 10 With regard to the validation of specific absorbed fractions for Reference Man organs, correspondence between MABDOSE and the Cristy-Eckerman data is dependent on both organ geometry correspondence and accuracy of radiation transport. Selecting the adult male reference phantom as the basis for comparison is not all inclusive: the possible combinations represented by six different phantoms in male and female varieties, having one of four different voxel resolutions, with one of 20 possible source organs, make an exhaustive comparison time consuming, and the generated data voluminous and of questionable value.…”

“…10 This library is an elemental cross-section database; cross sections for composite materials ͑i.e., soft tissue, lung, and bone͒ are constructed using a mass-weighted average of the interaction coefficients for the media's constituent atoms. 11,12 The compositions for soft tissue, lung, and bone used by MABDOSE are those specified by Cristy and Eckerman.…”
