Description of two new species of ectoparasitic Trichodina Ehrenberg, 1830 (Ciliophora: Trichodinidae) from freshwater fishes in the river Ganges, India

Abstract: Two new species of the genus Trichodina Ehrenberg, 1838, T. silondiata sp. nov. and T. pangasi sp. nov. from the gills of freshwater fish Silonia silondia (Hamilton 1822) and Pangasius pangasius (Hamilton-Buchanan) respectively from the river Ganges of West Bengal are described here. Wet smears of gills and skins were prepared in the field, air dried and impregnated with Klein's dry silver method. In case of S. silondia (Hamilton 1822) 24 out of 146 host fishes were parasitized on the gills. Infestation rate i… Show more

“…This discrepancy may be associated with the above-mentioned greater distribution of T. truttae since 1992. Infection of wild fish by trichodinid ciliates has been reported worldwide (Arthur and Lom, 1984;Asmat, 2001;Özer and Öztürk, 2004;Dove and O'Donoghue, 2005;Mitra and Haldar, 2005;Mitra and Bandyopadhyay, 2006; and varies seasonally in intensity (Özer, 2000;Özer, 2003;Yemmen et al, 2010). However, no seasonal variation in infection intensity was detected at river nos.…”

“…So far, Trichodinella appears to be rare in Brazil, but this may only be because researchers' interest in identifying trichodinids down to species level is comparatively recent and because of the small sizes of these species, which make it difficult to identify them even when they have been impregnated with silver nitrate. MITRA & HALDAR, 2004;AL-RASHEID et al, 2000;BASSON, 2010;MITRA et al, 2013;XU et al, 1999 andTANG et al, 2005).…”

“…Trichodinids are mobile peritrichous ciliated protozoa that are important within marine and inland aquaculture. More than 300 species of trichodinids have been recognized as parasites or symbionts of aquatic organisms (GONG et al, 2005;MITRA et al, 2013;MACIEL et al, 2018). They are perhaps the most frequent protozoa invading the surface of fish and have been implicated in severe disease and mortality in various parts of the world (NIKOLIĆ et al, 2003;KHAN, 2004;KHOSHNOOD & KHOSHNOOD, 2014;VALLADÃO et al, 2014).…”

“…Trichodinids (Trichodinidae Claus, 1874) are a widely distributed group of ciliated ectoparasites of mollusks, fishes and amphibians (Mitra et al, 2013). Representatives of the genus Tripartiella Lom 1959, however, are only found on the gills of marine and freshwater fish (Tang et al, 2013).…”
