Description of two new species in the genera Epectinaspis Blanchard and Strigoderma Burmeister (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Anomalini)

Abstract: Two new species of the genera Epectinaspis Blanchard and Strigoderma Burmeister from Central America, E. costaricensis new species and S. ngabe new species, are described and illustrated. For each species and their closest congeners, their diagnostic characters are discussed and the taxonomic keys for their determination are modified.

“…In the last three years, new species descriptions have led to a 49% increase in the known Costa Rican fauna of the tribe (Filippini et al 2013, 2014, 2015a-e; Ramírez-Ponce et al 2014; Ramírez-Ponce and Curoe 2014). The lack of taxonomical and faunistic studies in other Neotropical countries, however, makes it difficult to make comparisons with similar regions, or even to determine which species are endemic.…”

“…Anomalini is easy to recognize due to three basic morphological characters: 1) antennae with 9 segments, 2) elytra with a membranous margin, and 3) a transverse labrum . It is a heterogeneous group formed by more than 2000 species in 71 genera (Ohaus 1918;Machatschke 1972Machatschke -1974Micó & Galante 2005;Ramírez-Ponce & Curoe 2014). Of these, only 13 have been cited for Mexico: Balanogonia Paucar-Cabrera, 2003, Callistethus Blanchard, 1851, Callirhinus Blanchard, 1851, Dilophochila Bates, 1888, Epectinaspis Blanchard, 1851, Mazahuapertha Morón & Nogueira, 1998, Moroniella Ramírez-Ponce, 2015, Nayarita Morón & Nogueira, 1998, Paranomala Casey, 1915, Pachystethus Blanchard, 1851, Strigoderma Burmeister, 1844, Xochicotlia Ramírez-Ponce & Morón, 2009, and Yaaxkumukia Morón & Nogueira, 1998(Morón et al 1997Morón & Nogueira 1998;Paucar-Cabrera 2003;Ramírez-Ponce & Morón 2009;Ramírez-Ponce 2012.…”
