Descriptions of expert jazz educators’ experiences teaching improvisation

Abstract: The tensions present in learning jazz improvisation are well recognized given the contextual shift from more informal environments such as jam sessions and apprenticeships towards academic settings such as school bands and college jazz programs. Research suggests that the development of instruction in music education be informed by and modeled after expert practitioners, yet scant evidence exists on the most effective strategies, methods, and/or approaches for teaching jazz improvisation, in particular against… Show more

“…The probability that the solution visited by SA in the k st iteration is i and the solution visited by SA in the ( 1) k + rd iteration is j , which consists of two independent probability distributions, the probability of generating a solution j from the solution in the k th iteration () ij gT, where () ij gT is required to satisfy the normalization condition, and the probability of ( ) aT, where T is the temperature at the k th iteration. For the case of ij  , the expression for the transfer probability is as follows: aT is not always equal to 1, there is a possibility that the new solution will not be accepted, and the probability that the algorithm stays at solution i is:…”

“…The guidelines and principles for promoting digital music education in art colleges and universities were first proposed by the China Conservatory of Music. After entering the 1990s, with the integration and development of computer technology and MIDI technology, the traditional music education model has been subjected to a greater impact and challenge of digital music technology [1][2][3].…”

“…Six gamelan experts were recruited through the purposive sampling technique (Palinkas et al, 2015) together with the snowball sampling technique (Coss, 2018). They comprised gamelan instructors, practitioners, and musicians from various universities, music academies, and gamelan performance groups.…”

“…Information technology can synthesize the characteristics of text, sound, image, animation, etc., and create graphics, sound, visual animation, etc., which can fully mobilize students' enthusiasm, especially the popularity of the network greatly enriches the teaching means and teaching resources, providing teachers and students with concrete and image expression tools, combining visual, listening and games, singing, dancing, playing music, performing, rhythm, and creating organically, and has a very wide range of prospects [7][8][9]. The study of how to use effective music teaching methods and modern information technology to optimize music teaching is not only of great practical significance but also has a solid material basis and has the feasibility of full implementation [10][11][12]. This paper first analyzes the components of a personalized content recommendation system, focusing on a content-based recommendation system.…”
